Get Started Knitting Slippers!

One of the first "complex" projects you might want to learn in knitting is a pair of slippers. Many opt for a baby sweater of a teen tank top, but a good pair of cozy and beautiful slippers can be appreciated by everyone. It's funny how simple this project is, yet it receives much adoration. I've been offered money for a pair of custom slippers, and they make great gifts.

Knitting slippers does not require special equipment other than soft, warm yarn and your knitting needles. Which needles you use depends on what kind of slippers you'd like to make and what pattern you are following. I have included a few links for knitted slippers pattern in this hub.

Knitted Slippers: Which Yarn?

To start, you will want some soft, warm yarn, such as wool or alpaca, and it is always fun to use textured yarn to knit slippers. It adds an extra bit of flair and personal touch. Many knit slippers are multi-colored, so using a colorful yarn or more than one color of yarn works very well. But if you prefer one color, that will work fine, too. I always say you should make your first pair for yourself, so justgo with whatever you like best.

Two balls or skeins of yarn should be enough for one adult size pair of knitted slippers. You will also want to use smaller knitting needles. I normally use size 8 or smaller. You don't want big holes in a your slippers, right? But of course, very tiny holes are good to allow your feet to breathe. So gauge this using your own judgment and preferences.

Once you have chosen your kneedle size and yarn, you are ready to begin! There are "sew" and "no sew" patterns for knitting slippers, so you can decide exactly how easy you want your project to be. I personally like "no sew" slippers best. They require a few extra steps and maybe an hour more for your project time, but I just think they look best. This is entirely opinion, though.

Whatever you decide, I have yet to find any "difficult" slipper patterns.  You can see on the side a few pictures of the different styles of knitted slippers.  You can really do whatever you choose as long as you have the right pattern!  Some of these can even be worn outside of the house, if you choose.  No one would even notice.

Knitted Slippers Trick: Adding Traction to the Soles

One trick I have discovered is to texture the bottom of the slippers for a bit of traction. This is very nice when wearing knit slippers in the kitchen, bathroom, or on hardwood floors. A very easy way to do this is to buy puffy fabric paint (about $1 or less at the local craft store) and use it to free hand a design on the bottom of each slipper. Allow them to dry completely before wearing them or giving them as a gift. These really are a cheap a and easy way to impress your friends and family with your knitting skills.And you can always make them for that one person you NEVER know what to get on Christmas.
